Who Applies

Students who have been most successful in the Somatic Counseling Psychology Program and as therapists characteristically:

  • Understand the importance of leading a self-reflective life
  • Can work with their frustration and stress and do not project it onto others
  • Appreciate and incorporate relevant feedback
  • Respect supervision
  • Can self-resource and know how to access appropriate outside resources
  • Understand that they will not get everything they need in graduate school to be the best psychotherapists
  • Have realistic views and expectations about the program
  • Understand that a strong academic and experiential program yields an intense crucible-like learning experience that requires patience and trust
  • Are prepared to share and examine themselves personally in front of and alongside a group of peers
  • Are committed to becoming therapists and learning how to do that from the inside out
  • Are committed to diversity awareness within the field of psychology and in life in general
  • Can balance and incorporate the rigorous academic element with the personal material evoked in the strong experiential component of the program
  • Have a strong understanding of psychotherapy, and personal experience with the healing process (one to two years in individual or group psychotherapy)
  • Have some kinesthetic and tactile awareness of their experience with themselves and the world.
  • Have had several years post college life and work experience before they enter graduate school
